Jiang Xiaran, born in 1990 in Fuzhou, got undergraduate degree in art department, Xinan University and postgraduate degree in Sichuan Fine Arts Institute . Living and working in Beijing and Chongqing.
In his art project ‘The Secrets from the Strangers’, the artist randomly selects hundreds of addresses in Europe though Google map then sends off these letters with old postcards, or places them in residential areas. The letter says ‘Hello, Dear Stranger! I’m an artist from China. I’ll never know who you are. But if you would like to tell me a story of yours and share a secret with me, please write it down on the postcard and send back to me. Your secret, which you never speak out because of your social identity or your will of forgetting, will be presented in the form of art and be read, understood and remembered by different people. Although it is a pity that maybe we will never know each other, you secret will connect more strangers’ hearts silently. Thank you, dear stranger.’ The artist tries to detain the lives and events that over the power of time and make them be discovered and kept, again. The postcards that the artist collected and used have decades and even hundreds years history. One side is the surface visual impression of the local city. And the other is the image of the unknown human nature.
The artist designed the rules of the game and leads more and more people to join in the process of art crating in the form of art event. The material that the artist used is not these postcards; actually, it is the aspiration and pleasure that people get from telling their secrets with a stranger who is not related to their own life.
In the series painting Ye Hui Shu, Jiang Xiaran explores the history of postcard through 8 scenery of Amsterdam. The postcards with images of history node are stuck on the paintings as stamps, which makes the paintings become enlarged postcards of Holland.
From the surface, visual impression to the inner secrets of the Netherlands, then to the history of the Netherlands by culture research, Jiang Xiaran uses art to understand the country, and goes deep into it.
